Some Good Reads

I’ve been catching up on my reading, and have managed to read quite a few books that have actually held my attention throughout. Of late, I was having trouble sitting through a book, which is very unusual for me. The books that have managed to lift me out of that rut include:

The Woman in White: I find it really hard to believe that this was written in the 19th century. It is written so well, with twists and turns not unlike a modern day soap. The characters are well-etched. Had a good time with this one, though sometimes it does seem too lengthy. But one can understand, given that this was written in “episodes”.

The Blaft Anthology of Tamil Pulp Fiction: This was a fun read. The writing/translation is pretty slick and it’s just the sort of thing to read while travelling or on a holiday. What’s more, I could actually identify some of the writers given that my mom used to read the magazines in which their stories were published regularly.

The Time Traveler’s Wife: This blew me away. Wonderful writing, heavy with love and longing, with all the ingredients of a classic. It also had me thinking that we humans, as a race, place such a high premium on Love, above everything else. How would an alien describe this emotion?

Any recommendations, folks?

  1. The Woman in White was a dear friend – how many meals I have eaten with it! πŸ˜‰ I always thought Wilkie Collins got a real raw deal 😦 Thanks for reminding me of that friend πŸ™‚

The Blaft was ‘interesting’, not perhaps my ideal choice of reading, but easy to read.

The third I haven’t read – hope to do so, along with all the rest of the unread stuff
