I’d read The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd first. I wasn’t too taken with it, and didn’t think The Secret Life of Bees would be all it’s been made out to be. However, it is a good read. Some parts are very moving. However, I somehow didn’t feel the emotion associated with the Civil Rights movement episodes in the book – they just didn’t work for me. Sad, especially considering that Barack Obama was playing out the crowning glory moment so aptly, plucking all the right heartstrings!

I agree with your views. Though the book is quite gripping, there are certain parts that you cant really relate to what’s happening at present. Bu all said, the book veritably gives you good insight into the real world.
